As a division of Woldia University (WDU), CoBE plays a crucial role in transforming Ethiopia’s untapped natural resources into valuable products through education. The 10-year strategic plan of Woldia University, aligned with national policies for higher education, emphasizes the importance of expanding community service, research, and new educational fields. Business and economics education is considered fundamental to the country’s development.
Since its inception, the Faculty of Business and Economics has been pivotal in addressing societal issues through education and research. The department began in 2014, welcoming the first cohort of business and economics students to Woldia University.
A study examining the future of commerce education highlighted how quality educational offerings can compete in an increasingly globalized environment. The study sampled top commerce education providers from an estimated 52 institutions in Ethiopia, focusing on management, finance, and economics.
Based on these findings, the university restructured its organization. It drew insights from leading universities like Addis Ababa, Adama, Arba Minch, and Bahir Dar, implementing comprehensive structural reforms. This reorganization ensures that the College of Business and Economics can independently manage its budget and resources while remaining integrated with WDU on major issues.
